Nightwish Continues Success with Their New Album Dark Passion Play

night3.jpgFinnish symphonic metal band Nightwish was born in 1996 and released their first album, Angel Fall First, in November 1997. Their real breakthrough happened with Oceanborn album which was released in December 1998. Nightwish continued to gain attention with their next album Wishmaster which was released in spring 2000. Since those days has happened this and that, but the fact is that Nightwish has become one of the flagships of Finnish music industry. Although there are lots of fans and lots of those who do not like Nightwish, it is fantastic to see Nightwish, as one of the Finnish metal bands, being successful.

I remember purchasing Oceanborn album back in 1998. It was a stunning album because it was different and new. I found those instrumental melodies combined with mezzo-soprano vocals just stunning. I spent spring 1999 skiing in France with few dudes. We played Oceanborn album every single day after skiing the whole day in the Alps. I remember some folks getting bored and complaining about the “church heavy”, as they said. We did not really care too much, and answered simply “shut the fuck up”. Yep, Oceanborn is a classic and it still rocks after almost ten years.

Nightwish has now released their most expensive album, Dark Passion Play, which was an immediate success. Even though the new album has sold well, there are people who claim that Nightwish was buried in October 23rd 2005 as they fired Tarja Turunen. People claim that Nightwish has become an “average” band and the new songs do not sound like Nightwish anymore. I feel that Nightwish is looking for bigger audience. People in the world take easier the new album than those old ones. Pop and rock music are much more popular in the world than metal music.

All in all, Nightwish sounds a bit different nowadays, a bit more like a rock band. I like many of those new songs, but what I do not like in the new album is those messages to Tarja Turunen and Marcelo Kabuli (listen to Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed). They should have fixed their problems as a private issue and left the album only for music. Anyhow, let’s get back to the good things in the new album. I listen to classical music as much as metal, and I really enjoy those overwhelming classical and operatic elements in the new album. Some years ago I remember listening to Rhapsody and thinking “are there any limits in using classical elements”? Their music sounds more and more powerful and theatrical. Where is the limit? Anyhow, I enjoy those classical elements of Nightwish’s Dark Passion Play album.

Nightwish is now touring in Nordic countries. Check out Nightwish website for further information of the band.
Nightwish is also in MySpace.

Mirror of Deception - Very Good Doom Metal From Germany

mod2.JPGWow! I am glad I discovered Mirror of Deception a while ago. Mirror of Deception is a German doom metal band that at least I have not heard before, even though they have been in the industry since 1990! Mirror of Deception, formed by guitarists Jochen Fopp and Michaell Siffermann, plays traditional doom metal. Instead of becoming known worldwide, Mirror of Deception have gained a cult underground band status in Germany.

Although Mirror of Deception has been there since the early 90’s, they released their debut album in 2001 (Mirrorsoil), which helped the band get more audience. Their second album Foregone was released in 2004, and the third album Shards in 2006. Mirror of Deception is touring in Germany right now. If you are willing to see Mirror of Deception live, check out the gigs in their website.

Some of the melodies of Mirror of Deception remind me old Amorphis songs. Even though Mirror of Deception is not funeral doom, it reminds me also Shape of Despair, another great doom metal band.

Mirror of Deception lineup includes Michael S. (guitar, vocals), Jochen F. (guitar), Andreas T. (bass) and Jochen M. (drums, vocals). Mirror of Deception provides downloads, so get yourself to their website and download mp3’s, videos, photos and logos as well as covers. Mirror of Deception sounds good. I definitely recommend you to check out this band!

Godsplague - Damn Good Heavy Metal Music from Finnish Godsplague

godsplague.jpg“Godsplague’s Home Fuckin’ Page!” says the title of Godsplague’s homepage. I like that, it is straight. Godsplague is a heavy metal band from Hellsinki, Finland. They have recently released their latest album, called H8. Godsplague’s style has changed towards heavier, away from rock n’ roll. I must say it has been a great decision. The new album sounds just great. The band just got enough from rock n’ roll and decided to get heavier.

As it has been said in many reviews, the new Godsplague album sounds more outraged than the previous ones. It is full of nice hooks, furious anger and great melodies played with tons of passion. “I Will Break You” stayed many weeks in the official Finnish single list, which was suprising for the band. The new album was produced by Janne Joutsenniemi from Suburban Tribe, who is a band mate of Godsplague guitarist Euge Valovirta. Well, not to make this more complicated, both guys play in Suburban Tribe, but Euge Valovirta plays also in Godsplague and Janne Joutsenniemi has produced Godsplague’s H8 album.

Euge Valovirta has said that he enjoys southern rock, band such as Outlaws, Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Important influences Valovirta has got from Slash and Randy Rhoads. If you can understand Finnish, read more about this interview in Imperiumi website.

Ok, it is time to quit this bullshit. Godsplague is a great band and now it is time to see their videos. If you got interested in this band, purchase their music in Headbanger’s shop! Check out my article on Metal bands from Hellsinki, the capitol of Finland.

Australian Vanishing Point - New Album and a Video From Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point LogoFor long long time I have not got as good kicks from power or progressive metal music as I got when I discovered Australian band Vanishing Point. This great power metal group, Vanishing Point, comes from Melbourne, Australia. They have released four albums from which the latest one on this year. Vanishing Point was a good finding for me and I will order all four albums for sure.

Vanishing Point FlyerI am not going to tell the whole history of Vanishing Point because it is already available in Wikipedia. Instead I would like to mention few interesting things about the band. The band has been founded back in 1990’s by vocalist Silvio Massaro, keyboards player Pep Sammartino, guitarists Chris Porcianko and Tom Vucur, drummer Jack Lukic and bassist Joel Del Mastro. The first album was released in 1996, but around 2000 they started to gain some real attention after supporting Yngwie Malmsteen, Nevermore, Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray and Edguy. The band has played in big stages, such as Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, which has definitely provided more attention and new fans. In this year Vanishing Point has supported DragonForce in their Australian tour.

Vanishing Point plays good old power metal with progressive style. I enjoy high and loud, fine guitar solos and drumming as well as really good and beatiful solos. A special thank you for the band for those nice keyboard solos and instrumental sounds. I cannot say much about the lyrics yet because I have just recently discovered this band. I need a little more time to read through the lyrics. I might get back to this and write about the lyrics, but let’s first complete this one. For more good power metal, I recommend you to read my posts of Finnish band Stratovarius.

Check out the Vanishing Point albums and other stuff in Headbanger’s shop. I recommend purchasing the latest album, The Fourth Season. Here are the songs covered in The Fourth Season. By the way, check out the cover artwork of this band. Those are just stunning covers! I really enjoy Vanishing Point’s cover art. There are no mp3’s of Vanishing Point available in Amazon, but all the albums you can easily order from there.

A Group Called Apocalyptica from Finland - Few Words About Apocalyptica Videos and Music Sheets

Many years ago, a group called Apocalyptica, started to play Metallica cover songs just for fun. Apocalyptica was a cello quartet founded by the graduates of Sibelius Academy in Finland. Back on those days they were different and some folks did not take them seriously. Anyhow, in few years they gained name in the metal music scene. They were different but they played very interesting metal music with their cellos.

apo7.jpgNowadays this group called Apocalyptica does not play Metallica covers that much, but instead have composed their own songs. Apocalyptica has played together with big names, such as Rammstein, Sandra Nasicin, Nina Hagen, Cristina Scabbia, Ville Valo (HIM), Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and Corey Taylor from Slipknot. In addition to those Apocalyptica has also contributed to the albums of other bands, such as Bullet for My Valentine. As a diamond to the top of the list I would like to mention Apocalyptica’s version of Edvard Grieg’s classical piece “Hall of the Mountain King.

Apocalyptica has released eleven singles, eleven albums and two DVD’s. Few of the best known Apocalyptica songs are I’m Not Jesus, Bittersweet, Hope, Path, Faraway, Seeman, Life Burns and Nothing Else Matters. Right now Apocalyptica is touring in France in Europe. After that Apocalyptica continues their tour to Spain, UK, Ireland, and Germany and so on.

apo3.jpgApocalyptica has released few videos and few of them are linked here in Metal-Music-Videos.Com from YouTube.Com. My favorite Apocalyptica videos are The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Quutamo, I’m Not Jesus and Hall of the Mountain King played live in Germany. Ok, that’s not all. I forgot Repressed. What makes that video fabulous is the visiting vocalist Max Cavalera from Soulfly. I have been a Soulfly fan since the Ice Age and that particular music video of Apocalyptica and Max Cavalera playing together is just a pure diamond, a piece of art.

I have been looking for free Apocalyptica music sheets with poor results. I have found few sites providing Apocalyptica’s sheets with price on it. In case you are ready to pay, here are few sites providing the sheets:

SheetMusicPlus

Prex

Harmageddon

Here is a long discussion of Apocalyptica’s music sheets

Apocalyptica’s lyrics you can easily find by typing just Apocalyptica and the song name to Google, so I am not going to link them here.

Apocalyptica continues their successful career. It is great to see guys of my homecountry still going strong. Yeah, rock!

HELLsinki - The Home of Great Metal Bands

HELLsinki, the cold and dark home of great metal bands. Being located far from big metropolis and cities such as New York, LA, Tokyo, Paris, Hellsinki has still become the home of many great metal bands. HELLsinki is the capitol of Finland with around 1 million inhabitants. Right now (Friday night) HELLsinki is rainy, dark and cold city, but on summer time it is very live, warm and nice city with lots of happenings, such as Tuska open-air metal festival. HELLsinki is a good place to live, I really enjoy. It is also worth of visiting, so just pack your luggage and book a flight to HELLsinki. Meet your favorite metalheads in On the Rocks bar or see your favorite Finnish metal band live in Tavastia club.

If HELLsinki is the home of great Finnish metal bands, who are those metal bands? Let’s drop few diamonds..

The 69 Eyes

If I should name one great sleaze/glam rock band, it is definitely The 69 Eyes. Their best known songs are probably “Brandon Lee” and “Never Say Die”. The 69 Eyes has toured in Finland and abroad, and as an example, in 2005 they played almost 100 gigs in 15 countries. In early2006 the band started their first tour in United States.

Amorphis

Progressive metal band Amorphis is probably the best known metal band in HELLsinki. They became known in late 90’s with their Elegy album. The band is known for their use of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, as a source for their lyrics. A couple of years ago new singer joined Amorphis, and today the band is riding on top of their wave of success.

Norther

Being founded in 2000, Norther has quickly joined the group of leading Finnish metal bands. They have been in the official Finnish album list every time they have released a new album. Norther plays melodic death metal music and incorporates some elements from black, power and heavy metal. Norther is one of my all time favorites, really worth of checking out!

Apocalyptica

When they started, they were very different. They played Metallica covers with cellos. They are called Apocalyptica and they have become one of the best known Finnish metal bands. Apocalyptica is a cello trio of graduates of the Sibelius Academy in HELLsinki, Finland. Apocalyptica is just fantastic, superb. If you haven’t heard them yet, go and check it out! You won’t get disappointed.

Children of Bodom

New Heavy Metal Band Rusty Eye Discovered - Rusty Eye Rocks!

rustyeye.jpgErin promoted Rusty Eye in her comment yesterday. Because I am always interested in discovering new heave metal bands, I wanted to check this one out. This is a quick review of Rusty Eye and their music. This band really rocks and I encourage you to check it out.

Rusty Eye is not a new heavy metal band. Being formed in 1995 in Mexico City, has actually been around for pretty long time. In fact, they are almost as old as Children of Bodom, a great melodic death metal band. Rusty Eye is founded by its bassist and vocalist mr. Rust. Nowadays the band is located in Hollywood as many other great American metal bands.

Rusty Eye includes three people, mr. Rust behind bass and vocals, Jehu with guitar as well as Miss Randall behind drums and vocals. Rusty Eye recorded their first LP Rust N’ Roll in 2000 and the second one Cryogenic in 2005. After the second album the band won the Best Female Drummer of the Year Award” by LA music scene magazine. Rusty Eye has also recorded Live at The Joint and Stendhal Syndrome.

Rusty Eye, according to Mr. Rust, plays progressive, punk and metal music. They are inspired from horror movies, which can be seen in their video and lyrics as well. The biggest influences of Rusty Eye are Iron Maiden (can be heard in sound), Motorhead, Rush, Celtic Frost, Goblin and Misfits.

Here’s a music video from Rusty Eye, namely Mr. Cannibal. I was suprised with the “simple” but very nice sound they have in the beginning. It is a damn good combination of simple guitar and good drumming. After the first notes the sound changes to trash metal, but soon I was suprising again. “Au, au, au” vocals by Mr. Rust gave me a feeling “man, what is this..”, but soon I realized it fits very well in the song. The best part was just coming, and it is the great voice of the drummer Miss Randall. I cannot say what makes it so good. Her voice just rocks!

Buy Rusty Eye albums in Headbanger’s shop!

The name Rusty Eye refers to the corrosion of perception; an existentialist, unpretentious way of making music that doesn’t follow trends or popular fads, serving as an example in the creation of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music as an art form [Wikipedia].

Rusty Eye is also in MySpace!

Children of Bodom - My Top 5 Children of Bodom Albums

cob.jpgFinnish death metal band Children of Bodom has become one of the best known Finnish metal bands in the world. In few years they have gained lots of fans from all around the world. They have been popular in northern countries for years, as well as in Japan, but now they are becoming known in United States as well. Children of Bodom have been around for more than ten years and they are still going strong. Currently they are making their new album in studio and fans have already been provided one new mp3, called Tie My Rope. The band has also recorded C.O.B New TV video from the studio which is available in Youtube.

I have been a big fan of Children of Bodom since 1999. I heard them first time while I was drinking beer with my room mate in university. I stopped drinking and asked, “Man, what is this? This fucking rocks!”. Next day I went to buy the CD for myself as well. The album was the legendary Hatebreeder, which is still my favorite Children of Bodom album. Because C.O.B. is one of my favorite metal bands, I wanted to compile a list of my top five Children of Bodom albums. Notice that this is not a review, just a list of my top 5 C.O.B. albums, and therefore I don’t comment the albums that much. Let’s roll..

Children of Bodom Album #1 - Hatebreeder

Awesome death metal album from Children of Bodom, absolutely a great piece of metal music art! This album contains the very best C.O.B. songs, such as Silent Night Bodom Night, Warheart and Downfall. The album is fast, melodic and powerful with lots of guitar and keyboard solos. If you are into melodic death metal, I strongly recommend buying this classic album.

Buy Children of Bodom Hatebreeder album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #2 - Are You Dead Yet?

Next I jump from 1997 (Hatebreeder) to 2005 to album Are You Dead Yet? After many albums, Children of Bodom plays again great death metal on this fantastic album. I rate this album as C.O.B.’s second best album. This album contains two fabulous songs, namely Are You Dead Yet and In Your Face. Additionally the second last song in this album, Trashed, Lost and Strungout is just one more superb metal song.

Buy Children of Bodom Are You Dead Yet album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #3 - Tokyo Warhearts

Tokyo Warhearts is a live album recorded in Tokyo. It is an awesome album covering all the legendary pieces and played live. It includes all those great songs, such as Silent Night, Bodom Nights, Warheart, Bed of Razors, Downfall and Hatebreeder. Children of Bodom are a great band on stage and this album really makes it clear. This album should be in every metalhead’s shelf.

Buy Children of Bodom Warhearts album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #4 - Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live

The second live album of Children of Bodom is not as good as the first one, but it is so good that I rank it as fourth best album from the band. As the name says, the band probably lived in the years of chaos on those days. In this album C.O.B. guys don’t play as well as in the first live album, but the good old Children of Bodom sound fills in the room while Sixpounder and Silent Nights, Bodom Nights are played. For sure this is a great metal music album that really rocks!

Buy Children of Bodom Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #5 - Something Wild

Although this album is the last one in my list, it is definitely a great classic album in the world of death metal music. The original C.O.B. sound is loud and clear while young C.O.B. guys play with huge energy and enthusiasm in this album. This album covers the classic songs, In The Shadows, Lake Bodom and Deadnight Warrior. Something Wild is a great death metal album to which you will never get bored.

Buy Children of Bodom Something Wild album in Headbanger’s webshop!

This was my list of top five Children of Bodom albums. I hope you enjoyed and I hope this was useful for you. As I said, this was not a review, just a list of my favorite albums. A review of five albums would take a number of pages, so I prefer reviewing one album at the time. Just as a bonus in this article, I would like to point out a fabulous cover song from Children of Bodom, Oops I Did It Again. That cover song really show how skillful, capable, innovative and just so damn good musicians these guys are. Oh, and just check out how Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvala play Vivaldi. If you don’t know it yet, I bet you have never seen anything like this!

Oh, and there are lots of Children of Bodom T-shirts, beanie hats, patches, hoodies and even watches in Headbanger’s webshop. Check the out!

Nightwish Music Videos Directed By Pro Antti Jokinen - Bye Bye Beautiful

Nightwish is making money nowadays. The costs of making their new album were 500 000 euros which is pretty much for a metal band, so they probably expect a good revenue. Nightwish is clearly targeting to mainstream and expects good sales. Well, that’s nothing new and there is nothing bad in it. It is just interesting to see how far Nightwish will go.

Nightwish music videos are directed by Antti Jokinen, a professional Finnish director who has worked with many “big names”. When watching the Nightwish videos, especially the old ones and comparing them to Amaranth and Nemo, you can clearly see the development. The new Nightwish music videos are just perfectly made and they belong into the “top class”, let’s say. I am glad for that. It is always good to see bands of my homecountry becoming famous. I just wish this same would happen to Amorphis, C.O.B., Stam1na, Mokoma, Wintersun, etc..

According to Finnish media, the costs of making Nightwish video Nemo were 150 000 euros, which on that time was the most expensive music video made in Finland. The latest Nightwish video, Bye Bye Beautiful is also directed by Antti Jokinen. In the video band members are replaced by sexy babes. The idea comes probably from Queen’s video The Miracle in which the band members are replaced by little kids.

By the way, I would like to publish Nightwish lyrics, as well as other band’s lyrics, but I am not sure about the rights. They changed the rights in Finland some time ago, and because my server is located in Finland, I must follow the Finnish law. I need to find out. I read the lyrics many times because I sing as well, so I would like to provide you them for you as well. In this post I would provide you the Nightwish lyrics for their song Bye Bye Beautiful, but not yet.. Well, I will find out if it is legal. Meanwhile, here is Nightwish Bye Bye Beautiful music video, directed by Antti Jokinen. Cool, eh?

New In Flames Album Almost Ready

Swedish In Flames has been working with their new album and the work will soon be done. Peter Iwers says that the band has been working hard and they have been very active in studio. The new album is almost ready, only some fine-tuning is still ongoing. “This time it has been a lot of fun to all band members”, says Iwers.

In Flames is working in a studio in Sweden and the new album is planned to be released in April 2008. Band has recently made an agreement with Nuclear Blast Records, and so far the band seems to be very satisfied with the deal. Recently In Flames has been negotiating the Gigantour-tour with Finnish Children of Bodom.

A Video Of Hair Metal Bands

As I lived my youth in the 80’s, I have been privilidged to see the rise and fall of hair metal bands. Do you remember bands like Motley Crew, Poison, Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, LA Guns, Slaughter, New York Dolls, Van Halen and Cinderella? I won’t even mention Bon Jovi, it sucks too much..

Looking back nowadays all that seems so funny, especially the clothing and hairstyles. Especially the hairstyle of Poison, it was really awesome. Man, Poison is the reason for our planets’ ozone holes because of their chemicals. Recently I came across with this video in Youtube and I wanted to share it with you. This video brings me back to 80’s. Although it is funny, I am glad that melodic death metal is here right now. I got enough hair metal in the 80’s and now the time is for something harder.
