Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish was born in 1996 and released their first album, Angel Fall First, in November 1997. Their real breakthrough happened with Oceanborn album which was released in December 1998. Nightwish continued to gain attention with their next album Wishmaster which was released in spring 2000. Since those days has happened this and that, but the fact is that Nightwish has become one of the flagships of Finnish music industry. Although there are lots of fans and lots of those who do not like Nightwish, it is fantastic to see Nightwish, as one of the Finnish metal bands, being successful.
I remember purchasing Oceanborn album back in 1998. It was a stunning album because it was different and new. I found those instrumental melodies combined with mezzo-soprano vocals just stunning. I spent spring 1999 skiing in France with few dudes. We played Oceanborn album every single day after skiing the whole day in the Alps. I remember some folks getting bored and complaining about the “church heavy”, as they said. We did not really care too much, and answered simply “shut the fuck up”. Yep, Oceanborn is a classic and it still rocks after almost ten years.
Nightwish has now released their most expensive album, Dark Passion Play, which was an immediate success. Even though the new album has sold well, there are people who claim that Nightwish was buried in October 23rd 2005 as they fired Tarja Turunen. People claim that Nightwish has become an “average” band and the new songs do not sound like Nightwish anymore. I feel that Nightwish is looking for bigger audience. People in the world take easier the new album than those old ones. Pop and rock music are much more popular in the world than metal music.
All in all, Nightwish sounds a bit different nowadays, a bit more like a rock band. I like many of those new songs, but what I do not like in the new album is those messages to Tarja Turunen and Marcelo Kabuli (listen to Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed). They should have fixed their problems as a private issue and left the album only for music. Anyhow, let’s get back to the good things in the new album. I listen to classical music as much as metal, and I really enjoy those overwhelming classical and operatic elements in the new album. Some years ago I remember listening to Rhapsody and thinking “are there any limits in using classical elements”? Their music sounds more and more powerful and theatrical. Where is the limit? Anyhow, I enjoy those classical elements of Nightwish’s Dark Passion Play album.

there are people saying that, but of course all the people are not Nightwish fans. There are things in Nightwish I like but there are also things I do not like so much. It is the same with any other band. In my opinnion there is no perfect bands, which is good. That creates the contrast (dissimilarity) between bands, and by that we enjoy many different bands and their music. I agree with you that Nightwish is an amazing band, even though some people do not like their music.
WOW i didn’t think id get a comment back for. forgive me for taking so long to respond. You see… i differ from you because i like everything about Nightwish. i have listened to them for a while now and cannot find anything i don’t like. I’m majorly excited that they are growing more popular in the U.S. like 4 yrs ago i could hardly find anything on them.
I LOVE Anettes voice. its so different from Tarjas. where Hers is more opera Anettes like angelic in a way.
i do enjoy different bands.. however i get board with them and always go back to listening to nightwish. because i always pick up on something different in a song that i have not heard before.

You know, if you compare traffic of Nightwish and big bands such as Metallica, Linkin Park, Trivium and Lamb of God, you see that Nightwish website is the most visitied from those. Much higher than others, except Metallica. You can do this comparison in http://alexa.com under tab “Traffic Rankings”. The result tells me that Nightwish is very popular if measured by the number of visits on bands websites.

I like Over The Hills and Far Away & Once. I CANNOT pick a favorite CD. I do however like to listen to those two the most. I Love the new CD.
Century Child was the first Nightwish CD I ever got. and the first time I listened to Bless the Child… I fell in love. My brother actually got me into them. Because I like music with more then the normal rock sound… the orcastral sound. If thats what it is.
LOL. there are actually alot of Nightwish fans in New Jersey. I Got a few of my friends into them and one of them is in N J so thats how i found that out.
Tara, so you have discovered Nightwish when they already had some name. As the band comes from my homecountry, I heard about them before Oceanborn and I immediately got interested in them.

In Finland? Lousy winter, raining, boring.. Weather is bad right now. Country itself is beautiful, clean and peaceful. Nice place to live. A little bit quiet, small cities. Great bands, lots of metal music fans, lots of long hair and black clothes

Yes, lots of great bands come from Scandinavia nowadays. Black metal from Norway, trash and death metal from Sweden and Finland. We are pretty good with minor scales in music
Would be nice to visit your neighboring city, New York, one day. One of my fav bands, Anthrax, is from New York. Would be great to see their gig in there. I like travelling and I am always ready to go

Hey Tara, I never mentioned you that I live in the same little city with Marco Hietala and Emppu Vuorinen of Nightwish. I see them every now and then in stores. It’s a small world and this country is even smaller.

No, I haven’t talked to them, just seen few times. I’ve seen also guys of 69Eyes, Amorphis, Sentenced, Sonata Arctica, etc. This is a small country and there are lots of good bands. If you live here, you just cannot avoid seeing artists.
Denmark is a nice country. I’ve been there couple of times on summer.

I love Nightwish becouse Tarja singing in this group. She have an angel voice. I began listen Nightwish when i was 3 years old. Now i’m 12 years old. I thinks Nightwish will not have a global succsess becouse tarja is gone. What are you thinking Tarja ?
