The Very Best Trash Metal Album of All Time

I was thinking today, which trash metal album is the best of all time? Which album has generally been ranked as the best trash metal album of all time? You might think that it is not possible to say which one is the best one, while someone would say Metallica’s Master of Puppets is the best one. Is it the best one? Or is it Slayer’s Reign in Blood? Difficult question, eh?

There are many ways to “measure” which one is the best trash metal album of all time. Some people say the best one is the one that has sold the most, while others get furious for such a statements. Some folks say the best album is the fastest one, while others would say the best album is the one including heaviest riffs and sounds. There are many ways to approach this question, but let’s first think about the candidates.

master.jpgFor myself Metallica’s Ride The Lightning is an important milestone because, even though it might sound funny, with that album I discovered trash metal. Anyhow, Metallica’s Master of Puppets was so much better album that I personally consider Master of Puppets as a very good candidate. There were naturally many other bands as well, not just metallica. Slayer’s Reign in Blood has been considered by many people as the best trash metal album of all time. Slayer’s album was very very fast in 1980’s, and it is definitely a legendary album, a classic.

reign.jpgThe world is not that small. Metallica was getting very popular in the middle of 80’s, but there were other great bands as well. Good candidates for the “competition” are Testament’s The Legacy, Dark Angels Darkness Descends, Anthrax Among The Living, Exodus Bonded By Blood, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace, Kreator’s Pleasure To Kill, Slayer’s Hell Awaits and Metallica’s Ride The Lightning. Do you think one of these albums is the trash metal album of all time?

There have been a number of polls and surveys to find the best trash metal album of all time. Terrorizer magazine did this in 2003 and the result was that Slayer’s Reign In Blood won. Anyhow, people like what they like. We all have our own best albums, and my personal opinnion is that Metallica’s Master Of Puppets is the trash metal album of all time. Reign In Blood is a fast album, but I personally like very much those heavy riffs and melodies of Master Of Puppets. So, which are the killer tracks in that album? What makes it the best album? Three superb tracks are Welcome Home, Orion and Damage Inc. Ok, I just gotta mention also Leper Messiah, the track that has definitely the best lyrics in the album.

What is your opinnion?

I would classify them like this:

    1. Reign in Bloog (how can you go wrong with tunes like Postmortem and Raining blood!! )
    2. master of puppets
    2. Rust in Peace
    3. Kill em All (Seek and destroy….one of my favorites)
    4. bonded by blood- exodus

Sounds like a good list. 5 very good albums from great bands. I like that you have added also Kill em All on your list. It’s a very good album. James sounds so much different in Kill em All than in Master of Puppets.

    I say Anthrax!

  4. 4 headbanger Jan 14th, 2008 at 8:18 am

Thanks for your comment, Johan! Anthrax is a great band, even though I would not consider any Anthrax album as the best trash metal album.

I hate to pull the Genre Card, but back in that era of Slayer, hell Awaits and Reign In Blood I would have considered more speed metal than thrash. No discredit to them however. There is so many I don’t think I could ever name just one Best thrash record in the 80’s. If we narrowed it down by year that would make things easier.

Good points, Scott. You’re right, it is not easy to say what’s the best one.

  7. 7 Dave Feb 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pm

The list is good but don’t forget good bands like Testament and Kreator. Slayer Angel of Death is one of the best song.

  8. 8 headbanger Feb 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 am

Hi Dave, thanks for pointing out those two great bands!

  9. 9 NW Mar 2nd, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Please tell me you were talking about THrash metal and not trash metal? Because I’ve never heard of trash metal, though I’d assume the term would refer to bands like Linkin Park and not Metallica.

  10. 10 headbanger Mar 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 am

NW, you’re right. I mean thrash metal, not trash. I’m sorry for typing wrong, it’s because English is not my first language. Thank you for pointing this out. I hope I’ll write it correct from now one. Oh, and I agree with you that “trash metal” would be the right genre for many bands, but not Metallica. :)

  11. 11 Rock Mar 13th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

    Ok, here’s my quick list:
    • Anthrax ‘Among the Living’
    • Sepultura ‘Chaos A.D.’
    • Metallica ‘Master of Puppets’ and/or ‘Ride the Lightning’
    • Megadeth ‘Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?’
    • Slayer ‘Reign in Blood’ and/or ‘Seasons in the Abyss’

… and has everyone forgotten about Dimebag’s band…?
    • Pantera ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ - talk about great heavy riffs!!!

  12. 12 headbanger Mar 14th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Rock, that’s a good list. I like it! I also enjoy Anthrax Among the Living, it’s a great album. Well, at least I have not forgotten Pantera’s best album you mentioned. It’s absolutely one of the corner stones of metal music!

  13. 13 ..Mehmet Eki.. May 19th, 2008 at 7:20 am

Do not forget the destruction albums.
Powerful gitar riffs, smashing hammer drums and full throttle songs of demolition.

  14. 14 headbanger May 19th, 2008 at 9:36 am

Right on, Mehmet Eki. Thanks for your opinion!

  15. 15 Dave May 21st, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I’m a traditionalist, 8 minute epic’s, key changes, interludes etc, I say “Justice For All” but its all goog hey!!!

  16. 16 frdonath Jun 22nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    SODOM - Persecution Mania
    KREATOR - Extreme Aggression
    ONSLAUGHT - The Force
    SLAYER - South of Heaven
    SEPULTURA - Beneath the Remains

  17. 17 slater Jun 22nd, 2008 at 8:57 pm

the only one for me is Celtic Frost-Morbid Tales
slayer of course-reign in blood-south of heaven-seasons in the abyss
    DBC-Universe
    Firewind-All Album (Power Metal)

  18. 18 headbanger Jun 25th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

Dave, good point. 8 minute epic’s are just great.

frdonath, I do like Kreator and Sepultura very much. Kreator is legendary, one of those first thrash metal bands I’ve heard. They have been one of my favorites since the 80’s. First time I heard Sepultura was when I was a teenager and my friend played me Beneath the Remains album. I remember being amazed. Later when they released Roots I got more interested in Sepultura. Also I enjoy Soulfly very much.

slater, I’m also into Celtic Frost, but I didn’t hear them much in the 80’s. For some reason they were not known well in the countryside of Finland 15-20 years ago.

Learn how to spell “thrash” right, dumbfuck.

Oh baby, I did it already.

    For me..your list is awesome.
But for me Master Of Puppets is defenitely the Best.
I put Rust In Peace in the second place
    Then Kreator-Extreme Agression.

It’s a sad to know one of my fave Over Kill not in your list, Time To Kill is defenitely a headbanger anthem..Remind me to the early 90’s

  22. 22 Slithe Nov 7th, 2008 at 2:27 am

Don’t forget Seven Churches by Possessed.
