Few days ago I wrote about the best Metallica album of all time. Now also Scott Wharton has written about the best albums of metal bands in his MetalMartyr blog. Scott names the albums of well-known bands and says few words about each album he prefers. Scott has named few real diamonds, such as Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast and Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power. Those are absolutely great albums.
I wanted to name my top five albums of not so well known bands. Few of them are well-known here in Scandinavia, but not much in US. I listen to those bands quite often, even though some of the albums are a bit old already. They are kind of classics, just like Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast.
Now, it is very difficult to list my top 5 albums, probably impossible. I have hundreds, may more than one thousand albums, so it is impossible name top 5 out of those. I rather name five best albums from bands I like and listen to every now and then.
Amorphis - Elegy. This is a classic album from one of the best bands in Finland. In this album Amorphis turns from black metal to progressive metal with strong folk influence as well as to melodic death metal and NWOBHM.
Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder. Absolutely the best album from the flagship of Finnish death metal.
Sentenced - The Cold White Light. Sentenced, which is already buried, was one of the greatest Finnish metal bands. They were known from their “suicide songs”, because almost in every track they sing about suicide. Fantastic guitars, awesome melodies, fabulous vocals. A great band!
Nirvana - Nevermind. Even though grunge came from Seattle and killed old-school trash metal, I really love Nirvana’s Nevermind. Simple rock music with a taste of punk. Just good music.
Soulfly - Soulfly. When Soulfly was released I immediately got interested in Max Cavalera’s new band. I had been listening to heavy, trash, black, doom and death metal for long time and I needed something else. Soulfly’s alternative metal was new and inspiring.
This was it. Which albums YOU prefer? Just drop a comment. Would be interesting to hear what you like.
