Teräsbetoni Will Represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008

teras.jpgI knew this will happen. Teräsbetoni won the national Eurovision qualification with their song “Missä Miehet Ratsastaa”. Teräsbetoni got almost 40% of all the votes and therefore will represent Finland in the Eurovision song contest. Some weeks ago I wrote how Teräsbetoni is competing to represent Finland, and I mentioned that I consider this more like a joke. Lordi won the contest because they were so different and got lots of attention with their funny outfit. I cannot believe that another metal or rock band can win again. If Teräsbetoni will do it, the whole contest should be renamed to “EuroMetal” or something.

Check out the video below. It is from the finals of the national qualification to the Eurovision song contest 2008. Teräsbetoni plays their “Missä Miehet Ratsastaa” to Finnish audience. This band will represent Finland with this song in the Eurovision song contest 2008. Come on.. Aren’t we sick and tired with mighty warriors and swordsmen? As I mentioned in my previous post related to Teräsbetoni, I really appreciate and even admire Jarkko Ahola’s singing skills. His talents should be shown in other arenas than Eurovision song contest. Jarkko Ahola did great job by singing in Northern Kings album, and I really enjoy him singing “I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight“. Anyhow, this “Missä Miehet Ratsastaa” is bullshit. Ok, it’s a show. As music it gives me nothing.

Well, who am I talking about the Eurovision song contest? I really don’t know much about it and I am not even interested in it. When I heard that Teräsbetoni is competing, I got interested to write about it. Even though I consider “Missä Miehet Rastastaa” as a joke, I hope Teräsbetoni will win the contest. They represent my homeland and for sure it would be great for Finland to win. I just feel like Teräsbetoni belongs to other arenas. If they win, they will for sure get lots of attention, which means a good income for the guys of Teräsbetoni. If you are going to watch the Eurovision song contest, remember to vote for Teräsbetoni!

Are there some kind of rules about what kind of music we should send to ESC? It’s called Eurovision song Contest, and i really think that Teräsbetoni represents very well the kind of music Finnish people are listening right now, young and even older people.

With other countries, like Greece, the things are not like that. Greek people (even young) don’t like foreign music, they prefer to listen their own ‘buzuki-pop’, that has nothing to do with their this years representer. I think Teräsbetoni is really good and fresh appearence in ESC, it has nothing to do with Lordi, musically.

Niki, thanks for your comment. I’m not sure about the rules you are asking. Actually I don’t know. I must disagree with you a little. I don’t believe older people here in Finland listen to Teräsbetoni. You can compare the record sales of Teräsbetoni and some evergreen artists in Finland to see that Teräsbetoni is not even near to those figures of evergreen artists. Anyhow, many youngsters listen to Teräsbetoni, for sure.

The reason why Teräsbetoni is sent to ESC is that people gave most of the votes for Teräsbetoni. People believe Teräsbetoni will gain attention enough in order to win, and it is really possible. The point in ESC is about creating attention and interest. Even though many people cannot stand Lordi, they managed to win in ESC. I did not expect Lordi to win, even though I knew they could gain attention enough to win.

You’re right, Lordi and Teräsbetoni are much different musically. Both provide good shows, even though I’m not their fan. Oh, just to remind, I really appreciate Jarkko Ahola (Teräsbetoni) as a singer. He is talented and I do enjoy his singing, but I just don’t like that much Teräsbetoni’s records. I really hope they will win the contest. It would be great.

As a foreigner living in Finland, I think this is not about sending metal or ballads to the ESC… Finland is a heavy metal nation,,, there are such as bloody good finnish metal bands,, this is what Finland is good at.. so considering TB shouldnt be considered a joke,, Kari Tapio would have done the same flop as Jari Sillanpää, that was going to be the joke of the year… I dont know wether TB will succede or not, I HOPE THEY WILL,, the sure thing is that the european metal community wont let TB down….

Good points Paschendale, thanks! I agree with you that metal music runs in our veins, even though it is sometimes difficult to remember. Every time I have lived abroad I have noticed that Finns are more into metal music as a nation than some other cultures, such as southern European and Mediterranean cultures. I hope the same that TB will win, and I am sure metalhead around Europe won’t let us down.
