Lap Guitar Master Jeff Healey Has Died

Please notice that this is an off-topic post. This is not about metal music, but because the author is a fan of Jeff Healey, this short article was decided to be published.

jeffpic.jpgCanadian rock- and blues-guitarist Jeff Healey died in March 2nd 2008 in Toronto. 41 years old Jeff Healey suffered from cancer and passed away at St. Joseph Health Center in Toronto. Jeff Healey suffered from cancer since he was just one year old. He lost his eyesight due to cancer and he had been blind for almost his whole life. During the last few years Jeff’s condition got worse and he had been operated several times.

Jeff Healey became known worldwide in 1980’s as a lap guitar player. Jeff played guitar on his lap, just like a pedal steel guitar, which helped him to get different sounds from his guitar. Jeff Healey’s style was aggressive and strong. One of Healey’s first hits was Angel Eyes from his debut album See The Light. May be the best known song from Jeff Healey is the Beatles cover While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This same song was part of famous Hollywood movie called Roadhouse.

Jeff Healey started to play guitar in the age of three and in a band he started to play when he was 17. He founded the Jeff Healey Band in 1985 with bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen. With his band Jeff Healey created blues albums from 1988 to 2000 when he switched to jazz. He died just a month before the release of his latest album, Mess of Blues. In this new album Jeff plays blues again.

Jeff Healey’s music is not mainstream and that’s why his music is not that easy to understand and remember. As a musician Jeff Healey is comparable to bluesrockers, such as Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Healey was married to his wife Christie with two children.
