Do You Hate Metalcore?

MetalMartyr writes how tired it is to hear people saying “I hate metalcore”. In fact, it is tired to hear people complaining how they hate this metal genre and that metal genre. I agree with Scott (the author of MetalMartyr.Com). Many times when people say they hate this and that genre, they actually don’t have much idea of the genre. It appears that many die hard metalheads hate metalcore. Why? Well, I’m not sure, but I guess the reason is that metalcore is more for the masses than thrash, death and especially black metal. I personally enjoy melodic death metal the most, but I am also fan of many thrash, black, power and even metalcore bands. I am not into Linkin Park, which I consider more rock, but I enjoy Bullet For My Valentine very much.

Why people say they hate metalcore? I believe another reason for saying that is that people want to belong to some groups, such as death metal fans or punk fans. In that group people worship the genre they represent, and hating another genre helps to be more individual. Those who “love all kinds of music” are not tightly connected to a certain group. Hmm.. this is how I see it. I might be wrong. What do you think? Leave a comment.

As I said above, I enjoy melodic death metal the most, but I also listen to other metal genres such as thrash and power metal. Additionally I listen to other types of music very much, such as folk and classical. In fact I listen to classical more than metal. I feel that listening to many different kinds of music gives a helluva good basis for understanding various artists. Music in different forms is wonderful. It is something I get addicted to.

So I must say I don’t hate any genres. I just love some genres more than others.

I also enjoy classical(and by classical I mean Romantic era) and power metal. However, as far as genres go, metalcore does nothing for me. I do like the occasional metalcore song, but I won’t ever buy a metalcore album.

Thanks for your comment, Garg the Unzola. Nice to hear your opinion. I’m on the same line when it comes to classical, I listen to the music from Romantic era mostly. Especially I like Brahms, Sibelius, Listz and Grieg.

Ever notice how greatness or genius is subtly infused with a bit of ‘madness’? Like this dude’s hair for instance? lol

So many people who enjoy classical also enjoy metal, two perfectly opposing entities in my opinion. Just goes to show you that there can be harmony in the world, no matter how different the elements are…and perhaps the solution to world peace can be achieved through music. What do you think?

Heh.. yeah, I’ve noticed that. It’s true. Anyhow, I think it is also part of the imago the marketing group behind those artists want to create. Those a bit “mad” virtuosos gain more attention, which again means more income. Not sure, just guessing. Anyhow, I like Evgeni Kissin, Yundi Li and other mainstream piano artists.

You’re right. Many metalheads I know are also fans of classical music, especially the music from Romantic era. Don’t know why, but this is what I have noticed. Certain metal genres, such as power metal, include elements from classical. Did you know that Metallica’s Cliff Burton was a great fan of classical music and used lots of classical elements in his bass solos and riffs. This is according to the book I have reviewed in this blog. Metal and classical sound much different, but there are common elements in both, even though metal is classified as popular music and classical is is considered as art. Can’t say if music could help to bring peace to the world, but at least it brings peace at my home If we have some arguing at home, good music (not thrash metal in this case even though it is great) can bring peace.

i believe i just read that Bullet for my valentine is metalcore? well.. i don’t really agree with that. I guess if people think that BFMV is metalcore, that’s why they hate the genre?

Well I believe I can give an answer to this question. See, here it is (atleast my POV).

Metalcore is a fusion genre between hardcore punk and metal, borrowing the simplicity and sometimes lyrics from punk and giving it a metal sound. They remove all the technical traits (not mathcore but mathcore is completely underground).
Most metal artist are 25 years old because the music is technicaly more demanding than punk in which you need to know three chords to make a band (heck Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols failed to play the bass at all.)

Also this gives a lot of Scene Kids the feeling that they are “metal heads” even though they don’t know bands like Death, early Kryptopsy, Motorhead, they don’t anything about the 1.st and the 2.nd wave of black metal, all they get is this simplified form of metalized punk (I just made that up).

Why populised? Well, the easier the rhytms are the easier it is to follow the music (compare Technical Death Metal band Necrophagist and Metalcore band As I Lay Dying, also take a look at the size and the “quality” of the fanbase.

The lack of “quality Metalcore” ( if the term itself is not contradictive) also shows if you look at the fanbase. Lets compare Metalcore vs. Death metal.

Metalcore: You get snot-nosed kids, emos, scene kids, you know….

Death Metal: You get either lunatics, or technical maniacs or people who just want to filter their stress levels.

So thats what I think, TRVE metalheads are afraid of their subculture fanishing due to worrying amount of emos and scenes in the industry nowadays (take a look at a metalcore band photo and a *insert favourite metal genre* band ). I personaly don’t regard metalcore as a metal genre anyway.

THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION AND HOW I LOOK AT THINGS.
