Swedish flagship metal band In Flames has become one of the most popular metal bands in Scandinavia, and in Finland it looks like In Flames hysteria is beginning. Come Clarity album has sold almost half a million copies, but is the new album Sense of Purpose going to explode the bank?

As I mentioned few days ago, I have received the latest issue of Finnish music magazine Soundi. The latest issue contains few very interesting articles, such as the interview of In Flames. In this blog post I refer to the interview, but I strongly recommend you to read the whole story from Soundi magazine. If you don’t understand Finnish, you might have some difficulties with understanding the interview..

In Flames played in Finland last summer in Ruisrock festival. Guitarist Jesper Strömblad was a bit surprised with the hysteria among the audience. Thousand of fists hit the air before In Flames had even started their show. In Flames seems to have lots of fans in their neighboring country. In the interview of Soundi magazine Strömblad says “You have awesome festivals here in Finland. I could say (with a smile in face) that we were transferred to a very distant place by helicopter, dropped with parachutes to the area, and still we had the house full of people and damn good feeling“.

New album of In Flames, Sense of Purpose, is going to be released in early April. In Flames has purchased their own studio where the new album has been created. According to the band, they really don’t miss the times of recording previous album. Come Clarity was recorded I two studios. Vocals, drums and keyboards were recorded in Uppsala, while guitars and bass were recorded in Göteborg. Long distance caused problems with communication. Anders Friden sent massive files over the Internet and other band members had to wait while the files were downloaded. Now everything works much easier as the whole band works in their own studio.

The IF Studios is really professional and comfortable studio, as one can see in the videos In Flames has published in their MySpace site. One might wonder how much In Flames has paid for the studio, and the answer is probably millions of Swedish Krona. The studio has hundreds of square meters of space, little offices, instrument storages and places to hang around. Some people may know that In Flames dudes are keen on video games, and in the studio one can find lots of XBox games. “We just purchased a damn expensive place to spend free time“, says drummer Daniel Svensson with a smile in his face.

In Flames aims to sound timeless and with their ninth album they are very close to the goal. A Sense of Purpose was created from pieces of guitar riffs that were further processed with drum machine. Step by step the demos turned to reasonable entities. Finally the new album was ready. Fans around the world cannot wait to get that album in their hands.

In Flames doesn’t rehearse that much anymore. “We haven’t rehearsed for years, but before the tours we need to refresh our memories“, says Peter Iwers. In Flames are professionals and have long term experience in music and music business. As the reported of Soundi magazine asks about the negative things in music business, Peter Iwers replies “I don’t understand people who become assholes due to success. For example two hours photo session can be too much for artists with huge ego“. I agree with Peter Iwers. I like bands and artists who remain the same persons, no matter how successful they are. In Flames is a good example of such a band. Rock on In Flames!
