It is the early 1990’s. Thrash metal is literally dead and grunge hysteria is growing from Seattle. A band called Nirvana is blasting out from every kid’s ghettoblaster, including mine. I am one of the last Mohicans of thrash metal in my high school, but I’m also turning my head towards grunge. There something raw, original and revolutionary in grunge and Nirvana. I am getting addicted to it.
As soon as I got Nirvana’s classic album Nevermind in my hands, I played it continuously day after day. I was a youngster and I spent much time drinking booze and going crazy in bars. I lived behind the back of God where they played either disco music or evergreens in bars. You can guess how frustrated we metalheads were. Sometimes they played Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, and in those moments I couldn’t resist myself going moshing and banging my head. Nirvana was so welcome to our annoying world of folk and disco music. It was time to get back to the mosh pits and spit out all the rage inside of us. Nirvana came and shacked the music industry as well as our lives.
That was some 15 years ago. Let’s get back to today’s riffing world metal music. Grunge is dead. It came fast and it died fast. In fact grunge died together with Kurt Cobain. Few days ago I got the DVD of Nirvana’s Nevermind in my hands. The DVD is a story of that classic album with a number of interviews of important persons related to that album.
Nirvana Nevermind DVD presents the story of each track in the album as well as the story of the whole album and making of it. It starts by telling how Nirvana came to record the album, how each track was created and what interesting techniques were used in recording the tracks. The DVD includes exclusive interviews of Nirvana band members, recorder and influential people of music industry.
The structure of Nirvana Nevermind DVD is simple, but it is a great DVD. Even though I am mostly into metal music, Nirvana played important role in my youth and therefore it really feels nice to understand how Nevermind was created and what are the stories behind each track. It is also very interesting to watch the interviews of band members and see rare video footages from live shows of Nirvana. What I find the best in this DVD is when the tech guy plays vocal recordings without instruments in the background. For example, it is nice to see how they overdubbed vocals and added more tracks to get heavier sounds. Although this is basic technique in recording, it is interesting to see how this particular album was created.
Nirvana Nevermind DVD is just awesome. I love it. That’s all. I give it five stars, ten stars or any other maximum of stars. This DVD brings me back to the early 1990’s and I love it. This DVD opens me a little bit of the world of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and I love it. This DVD is just great.
Do you remember the opening sounds of Smells Like Teen Spirit continuing with “hello, hello” section? Do you remember how it explodes to the chords? Do you remember the awesome energy of Territorial Pissing? It was so fantastic back in those days, and it still rocks!
