As some readers might have noticed, I have been writing posts related to trash metal lately. For example, I have been writing about the early days of Metallica and their best album.

Even though old Metallica rocks, it is time to move on. There are a number of other great trash metal bands. One of them is Annihilator. Canadian trash metal band Annihilator was founded in 1984 by guitarist Jeff Waters. The band released their first album, Alice in Hell, in 1989. They have released 13 albums from which two are live recordings.

Jeff Waters founded Annihilator in Ottawa together with vocalist John Bates. They recorded a track called Annihilator, which was finally released in 2005 in album Schizo Deluxe. Waters and Bates found bassist Dave Scott and drummer Paul Malek, and this line-up lasted two years, after which Bates and Scott decided to leave the band. Today the only original member of Annihilator is Jeff Waters.

Annihilator was one of the early pioneers of trash metal and disappeared in 90’s when grunge came and buried trash metal. Now when trash metal is again alive and kicking, also Annihilator is back. It is really respectable that Annihilator has been in metal for more than 25 years! In 2007 Annihilator released a new album called simply Metal, to which some big names such as Alexi Laiho, Angela Gossow and Danko Jones contributed. Unfortunately this new album does not impress me much, even though I enjoy Angela’s growls and Alexi’s guitar. I prefer the early albums of Annihilator, especially the first two ones. I recommend you to listen to tracks Maximum Satan and Couple Suicide in the new album, and then listen to the legendary Alison Hell from their first album Alice in Hell. The early material makes my head banging while with the new stuff I just get bored.

Even though Annihilator’s new album is not remarkable, their first two albums are. I consider those albums as classics in trash metal. Taking into account the long career of Annihilator and those classic albums, I must say Annihilator belongs to the family of great trash metal bands of all time.
