Roope Latvala of Children of Bodom is the First Guitar Hero in Finland

Back in the mid-80’s I used to listen to Stone, one of the very first and very potential thrash metal bands in Finland. Stone was different. They were so unique and pumped with adrenaline. Since the first moment I heard their “Get Stoned“, I was their true fanboy.

Roope Latvala of Children of Bodom used to play guitar in Stone before joining C.O.B. For sure he has had other projects as well, but these two are the flagships in his career. Roope Latvala is called the first guitar hero in Finland, and many guitar players consider him as an idol. No wonder why. Just like Alexi Laiho, Roope is very skillful with his guitar. Roope is a humble man and he doesn’t really care about his guitar hero reputation. According to Roope, the main point is to be able to make living by doing what he loves the most; playing metal music.

I have heard rumours that Stone is making a comeback. People say Roope is waking up the classic line-up of Stone and that they will release a new album soon. Stone toured last time 15 years ago, and guys haven’t been playing much. According to Soundi music magazine, Stone played together pretty well after a couple of rehearsals. Soundi continues by saying that Roope had some problems with solos, but otherwise the band played well together.

Oh boy.. I might see my childhood heroes live this summer because Stone is going to play in Jurassic Rock in August. When Alexander Kuoppala left C.O.B., I remember thinking “oh man, now this band is over“. Once again I was wrong, big time. I was pretty surprised as Roope Latvala joined the band. I realized that Children of Bodom couldn’t be more perfect. Just imagine having two best guitar players and the best keyboard player of my country in the same metal band. C.O.B. today is a perfect metal band with some great punk attitude.

Although Stone is making their comeback, Roope Latvala is still busy with C.O.B. This autumn C.O.B. will tour U.S., and after that they will tour in Europe together with Slipknot. Unfortunately Children of Bodom has no time to tour in their home country. Finland is just too little market for big metal bands like C.O.B.

Children of Bodom is known from their wild touring. Every night is a party night. Guys drink a lot and literately enjoy every minute. Imagine you playing in front of tens of thousands of people and drinking every night. It must be strange to come back home which is quiet and peaceful. What would you do? I would heal myself with a bottle of whiskey.

Children of Bodom is Breaking Through in America

15.jpgFinnish death metal band Children of Bodom is doing great in America. With their Blooddrunk album C.O.B. has climbed up to 22nd position in American Billboard album list. So far only “love metal” band HIM has been more successful Finnish band in America. Blooddrunk has been successful also in other countries. It is seventh in Canada, 12th in Japan and 44th in UK. In Germany the album is tenth and in Austria it is 19th. Notice that these are “general” lists. In the rock list of UK Children of Bodom’s Blooddrunk is currently the first one. In Finland the situation is naturally the same.

Wow! Impressive C.O.B.! I am very glad for the success of one of my favorite death metal bands. It is great to see how metal music of my tiny country is breaking through in the world. It is difficult for Scandinavian bands to break through because English is not our first language. Additionally American market is very different from Scandinavian, so Finns usually just don’t know how to market their music in America. Bands like C.O.B. have already their local “marketing machine” (Spinefarm US) rolling in America, but smaller bands doesn’t have that luxury.

Having a Finnish band on position 22 in American album list is a big thing for Finns. We feel like it is a national breakthrough. Finns are proud of Children of Bodom, even though most people don’t even listen to their music. Although we are a metal music country, most people listen to pop, rock and evergreens.

Today Finnish newspaper Iltasanomat wrote about Children of Bodom’s guitarist/singer Alexi Laiho. As they say in the article, Alexi Laiho has many times been asked about the name of the band. “Who are the children?”, “what Bodom?”. The name of the band is related to the Lake Bodom where three youngsters were murdered in 1960. “Although our name comes from there, our music does not refer to the murders“, says Alexi Laiho. “We don’t try to tell what really happened in the lake in 1960. We create stories of what might have happened in there. What really happened there is still a mystery and will stay as a mystery“, continues Laiho.

Newspaper Iltasanomat lists the songs related to the murders of Lake Bodom. Those are Bastards of Bodom, Bodom Beach Terror, Silent Night, Bodom Night and Bodom after Midnight. Alexi Laiho was born in Espoo where the lake is located. Laiho was asked if he has been camping in the lake, to which he replied: “no, never, but I have spent a lot of time in there. It is still a great place. There are very nice beaches and good places to grill food. May be one day I will go camping by the lake“, says Alexi Laiho.

Oh boy, it would be great to see C.O.B. live this summer. This band has got some furious energy!

Children of Bodom New Video - Children of Bodom Blooddrunk

cob.jpgChildren of Bodom has released a new music video, called Blooddrunk. Children of Bodom’s new music video was filmed few weeks ago in eastern Germany. In this new video Children of Bodom continues their traditional style as in In Your Face and Are You Dead Yet. In the video Children of Bodom plays in front of a camera. This same style is used by Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy as well.

Children of Bodom’s Blooddrunk sounds good old C.O.B. It starts with a very nice keyboard riff after which strong, traditional C.O.B. guitar riffs start. Alexi’s voice sounds like always, pretty good but not fabulous. In the video weird dudes hand around in the countryside of eastern Germany. Oh man, it looks like nobody has lived there since the World War II..

Children of Bodom’s Blooddrunk sounds pretty good. It is a nice trash metal piece with good guitars and an interesting keyboard riff. Anyhow, it doesn’t beat the earlier material of Children of Bodom. It looks like Children of Bodom guys have become older and cannot reach the level of Hatebreeder album. Where’s the anger, hate and furious attitude? Oh yes, it is all in this new album, but Blooddrunk just does not sounds as awesome as In Your Face, Trashed Lost and Strungout, or Silent Nights Bodom Nights. In the good old days I used to listen to Children of Bodom 3-4 hours a day. Blooddrunk is pretty good, but it does not impress me enough to really bang my head. For some reason I soon find myself listening to Trivium and Lamb of God.

Children of Bodom is one of my favorite trash metal bands and I wish I could promote their new album with greater passion. No, Blooddrunk just doesn’t set me into flames. Well, hopefully Children of Bodom has already created awesome music that I can listen to whenever I want. One of my all-time favorites is their track Childred of Bodom.

Who Would You Like To Be for One Day - Trading Places With Metallers

Scott IanScott from MetalMartyr wrote a nice post of Trading Places With Metal Faces. Instead of listing the metal faces Scott would like to trade places with, he lists the faces he would NOT trade. Before reading more than the first few lines of Scott’s post, I thought about Sebastian Bach from Skid Row and Lars Ulrich from Metallica, and surprise, they are both in Scott’s list. Read it, it’s a good post!

Based on Scott’s post, I decided to write about five metallers with whom I WOULD like to trade places, but only for one day. You know, most of us have dreamed of being a rock star. The kid inside me still wants to be a rock star. Now the question is like who I would like to be and why? Let me tell you. Notice that I would like to trade places only for one day. I am satisfied with myself, so one day would be enough. Read more to find out why.

1. Michael Kiske - I sing and I suck. My voice is tenor but it is just horrible compared to great singers like Michael Kiske. I would like to trade places with Michael Kiske in order to know how it feels to be an awesome singer. As Michael Kiske I would sing “Eagle Fly Free“, “I Want Out” and “Keeper of the Seven Keys“, all from the Helloween album Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part 2. Michael Kiske is one of my favorite vocalists and it definitely would be great to be in his boots for one day.
2. Scott Ian - As a life-long Anthrax fan I would like to spend one day as Scott Ian. Why? Not because he is good with his guitar, but because I want to know how it feels to jump around in front of thousands of people while you are wearing funny shorts. Those funny-looking shorts were the style on 1980’s and I would like to experience it!
3. Eric Adams - I want to spend one day as Eric Adams. I respect him as a singer; he has a good and powerful voice. Listen how he sings Nessun Dorma to know why I enjoy his singing. Anyhow, I am not into his clothing style. I find those leather clothes embarrassing. As Eric Adams I would change the clothing of Manowar. For Karl Logan I would say “go to gym”.
4. Alexi Laiho - Children of Bodom is one of my favourite bands and Alexi Laiho is one of my favorite guitar players. I would love to spend one day in his boots learning his skills with guitar. Well, during one day you really can’t learn much, so most probably I would get wasted with the other guys of the band. Anyhow, I would enjoy that day. The day after would probably be the worst hangover in my life.
5. Phil Anselmo - Yeah, you know. What would be better than being Phil Anselmo for one day and singing Cemetery Gates in front of 50.000+ people. At least I would hear Dimebag playing live. I never got the chance.

With whom you would trade places?

5 More Best Albums Of Metal and Rock Bands

elegy.jpgFew days ago I wrote about the best Metallica album of all time. Now also Scott Wharton has written about the best albums of metal bands in his MetalMartyr blog. Scott names the albums of well-known bands and says few words about each album he prefers. Scott has named few real diamonds, such as Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast and Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power. Those are absolutely great albums.

I wanted to name my top five albums of not so well known bands. Few of them are well-known here in Scandinavia, but not much in US. I listen to those bands quite often, even though some of the albums are a bit old already. They are kind of classics, just like Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast.

Now, it is very difficult to list my top 5 albums, probably impossible. I have hundreds, may more than one thousand albums, so it is impossible name top 5 out of those. I rather name five best albums from bands I like and listen to every now and then.

Amorphis - Elegy. This is a classic album from one of the best bands in Finland. In this album Amorphis turns from black metal to progressive metal with strong folk influence as well as to melodic death metal and NWOBHM.

Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder. Absolutely the best album from the flagship of Finnish death metal.

Sentenced - The Cold White Light. Sentenced, which is already buried, was one of the greatest Finnish metal bands. They were known from their “suicide songs”, because almost in every track they sing about suicide. Fantastic guitars, awesome melodies, fabulous vocals. A great band!

Nirvana - Nevermind. Even though grunge came from Seattle and killed old-school trash metal, I really love Nirvana’s Nevermind. Simple rock music with a taste of punk. Just good music.

Soulfly - Soulfly. When Soulfly was released I immediately got interested in Max Cavalera’s new band. I had been listening to heavy, trash, black, doom and death metal for long time and I needed something else. Soulfly’s alternative metal was new and inspiring.

This was it. Which albums YOU prefer? Just drop a comment. Would be interesting to hear what you like.

Children of Bodom - Children of Bodom: Living Dead Beat

Image source: http://www.myspace.com/childrenofbodomHell Yeah! It is 2008 and I wish you a great new heavy metal year! It is time to kickstart this new metal year, and what would be a good band for the very first post in 2008? Certainly it is Children of Bodom because they are one of my favourite bands and they come from my home country. Children of Bodom is going to release their new album, called Blooddrunk, in February. What’s up with C.O.B.? They have been shooting a video in Berlin in December 2007, and according to their website, the new videos look really cool already now. I am looking forward to watch them!

The Rockhouse Method is going to release a comprehensive instructional DVD of Alexi Laiho guitar techniques. According to C.O.B. website, “content on the DVD will feature fundamental techniques, as well as helping aspiring players develop the skills needed to play Alexi’s style and will be geared toward intermediate to advanced players“. The DVD will be released in March or April 2008. Notice that “Alexi’s instructional DVD will be available at MI retailers around the world for $24.99 and will come with a free lesson booklet and membership to Rock House’s lesson support at their website where students get supplementary support for the lessons featured on the DVD“, as said in C.O.B. homepage.

Just to mention, Children of Bodom has been confirmed to play in Wacken Open Air metal festival in Germany in 2008. They will also play in London in March 8th 2008. See more gigs in Children of Bodom website.

Five Bands I would Like to Invite to My Christmas Party

Christmas is soon here and so is the party. I mean so called “pre-Christmas” party. We have already had that party at my work but some companies are going to have it on this week. There is always some live music in our parties. Usually there are some deadly boring old fags playing 70’s pop and rock covers. I have never seen a metal band in any parties organized by my employers. If I was in charge I would organize a bit different Christmas party..

Who would you like to see live in your party? I am into metal music, so I created a list of five bands I would like to invite to my party. After their gigs the bands would naturally join the audience and spend time with us. Which bands I would invite? Read below.

Band number 5: Mokoma

Mokoma is a band I would definitely invite to my party. They know how to entertain audience and how to play some trash metal. I would love to sit down with Mokoma’s singer Marko Annala and share a discussion. He is a clever guy and would probably have interesting things to say. Unfortunately he has quit drinking, so I could not drink a couple of Whiskey’s with him. Anyhow, Mokoma would be a perfect band to start the party with their aggressive trash metal.

Band number 4: Machine Head

Our trash metal party would continue with the great American metal band Machine Head who would provide us some more headbanging rhythms. I believe few dudes at my work would be very satisfied with Machine Head who would start their “my Christmas party” gig by playing Now I Lay Three Down.

Band number 3: Anthrax

After two great trash metal bands it would be great to continue with.. more trash metal! Good old Anthrax would play us their old classics such as In My World, Indians and Got The Time. Additionally they would play also some new stuff, but the singer would be Belladonna. With all the respect, all Anthrax singers have been good, but personally I prefer Belladonna. My great Christmas party would be well warmed up when Anthrax plays their What Doesn’t Die.

Band number 2: Lamb Of God

No no, my party would not be over yet. It would just get better and better, because the next band coming to satge would be Lamb Of God, who would start their gig by playing Redneck. Now, after Lamb of God gig I could have my change to drink a couple of Whiskey’s with these guys who do not say no to alcohol. I would not ask a single “fan question”. I believe they here them enough.

Band number 1: Children Of Bodom

Just before the midnight, the fifth band in my Christmas party would enter the stage. Children of Bodom would start their gig by playing Silent Nights, Bodom Nights. They would play 30 minutes for me and other nerds at my work. Just before the end of their gig, Children Of Bodom would play In Your Face.

So, my party would finally be over and all the nerds would get back to their homes. Well, I would thank the bands and ask them to join me and my mates to see the well kept secrect, Pantera playing live at Tavastia club in Hellsinki. I think I would run out of money before the first bands has entered the stage..

Have a great trashing Christmas party! Who would YOU invite? Drop a comment.

Children Of Bodom - C.O.B. News TV Part 2

cob.jpgI am so damn busy with my job today.. I slept zero hours last night and I feel like sleeping right now. I gotta wake up! I planned to write more about the great heavy metal bands of all time, but I have no time today. Instead I quickly announce that Children of Bodom, the awesome Hatecrew from Finland, has released their second part of the superb C.O.B. News TV. Man, it is great. I wish I was there drinking booze with the guys. It definitely looks zillion times more interesting than sitting here in this f%$#£@& office.. Few jokes in this video are damn funny, but unfortunately you can understand them well only if you speak Finnish.

Children of Bodom News TV part 2 brings you to their studio in southern Finland where they are making the next Children of Bodom Album, called Blooddrunk. C.O.B. News TV Part 1 provided few clips from studio sessions during the first few days of recording. In the first News TV we saw clips of nice guitar sessions, while in the second part we are provided with few short, but great interviews. Check out the last few seconds of the video below. Is C.O.B. going to play some power metal? Sounds good :)

HELLsinki - The Home of Great Metal Bands

HELLsinki, the cold and dark home of great metal bands. Being located far from big metropolis and cities such as New York, LA, Tokyo, Paris, Hellsinki has still become the home of many great metal bands. HELLsinki is the capitol of Finland with around 1 million inhabitants. Right now (Friday night) HELLsinki is rainy, dark and cold city, but on summer time it is very live, warm and nice city with lots of happenings, such as Tuska open-air metal festival. HELLsinki is a good place to live, I really enjoy. It is also worth of visiting, so just pack your luggage and book a flight to HELLsinki. Meet your favorite metalheads in On the Rocks bar or see your favorite Finnish metal band live in Tavastia club.

If HELLsinki is the home of great Finnish metal bands, who are those metal bands? Let’s drop few diamonds..

The 69 Eyes

If I should name one great sleaze/glam rock band, it is definitely The 69 Eyes. Their best known songs are probably “Brandon Lee” and “Never Say Die”. The 69 Eyes has toured in Finland and abroad, and as an example, in 2005 they played almost 100 gigs in 15 countries. In early2006 the band started their first tour in United States.

Amorphis

Progressive metal band Amorphis is probably the best known metal band in HELLsinki. They became known in late 90’s with their Elegy album. The band is known for their use of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, as a source for their lyrics. A couple of years ago new singer joined Amorphis, and today the band is riding on top of their wave of success.

Norther

Being founded in 2000, Norther has quickly joined the group of leading Finnish metal bands. They have been in the official Finnish album list every time they have released a new album. Norther plays melodic death metal music and incorporates some elements from black, power and heavy metal. Norther is one of my all time favorites, really worth of checking out!

Apocalyptica

When they started, they were very different. They played Metallica covers with cellos. They are called Apocalyptica and they have become one of the best known Finnish metal bands. Apocalyptica is a cello trio of graduates of the Sibelius Academy in HELLsinki, Finland. Apocalyptica is just fantastic, superb. If you haven’t heard them yet, go and check it out! You won’t get disappointed.

Children of Bodom

Hey.. what should I say? Children of Bodom is the diamond. You know.. I have posted so many C.O.B. articles in this blog that I have nothing more to say than just C.O.B. fu$%#@# ROCKS!

Children of Bodom - My Top 5 Children of Bodom Albums

cob.jpgFinnish death metal band Children of Bodom has become one of the best known Finnish metal bands in the world. In few years they have gained lots of fans from all around the world. They have been popular in northern countries for years, as well as in Japan, but now they are becoming known in United States as well. Children of Bodom have been around for more than ten years and they are still going strong. Currently they are making their new album in studio and fans have already been provided one new mp3, called Tie My Rope. The band has also recorded C.O.B New TV video from the studio which is available in Youtube.

I have been a big fan of Children of Bodom since 1999. I heard them first time while I was drinking beer with my room mate in university. I stopped drinking and asked, “Man, what is this? This fucking rocks!”. Next day I went to buy the CD for myself as well. The album was the legendary Hatebreeder, which is still my favorite Children of Bodom album. Because C.O.B. is one of my favorite metal bands, I wanted to compile a list of my top five Children of Bodom albums. Notice that this is not a review, just a list of my top 5 C.O.B. albums, and therefore I don’t comment the albums that much. Let’s roll..

Children of Bodom Album #1 - Hatebreeder

Awesome death metal album from Children of Bodom, absolutely a great piece of metal music art! This album contains the very best C.O.B. songs, such as Silent Night Bodom Night, Warheart and Downfall. The album is fast, melodic and powerful with lots of guitar and keyboard solos. If you are into melodic death metal, I strongly recommend buying this classic album.

Buy Children of Bodom Hatebreeder album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #2 - Are You Dead Yet?

Next I jump from 1997 (Hatebreeder) to 2005 to album Are You Dead Yet? After many albums, Children of Bodom plays again great death metal on this fantastic album. I rate this album as C.O.B.’s second best album. This album contains two fabulous songs, namely Are You Dead Yet and In Your Face. Additionally the second last song in this album, Trashed, Lost and Strungout is just one more superb metal song.

Buy Children of Bodom Are You Dead Yet album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #3 - Tokyo Warhearts

Tokyo Warhearts is a live album recorded in Tokyo. It is an awesome album covering all the legendary pieces and played live. It includes all those great songs, such as Silent Night, Bodom Nights, Warheart, Bed of Razors, Downfall and Hatebreeder. Children of Bodom are a great band on stage and this album really makes it clear. This album should be in every metalhead’s shelf.

Buy Children of Bodom Warhearts album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #4 - Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live

The second live album of Children of Bodom is not as good as the first one, but it is so good that I rank it as fourth best album from the band. As the name says, the band probably lived in the years of chaos on those days. In this album C.O.B. guys don’t play as well as in the first live album, but the good old Children of Bodom sound fills in the room while Sixpounder and Silent Nights, Bodom Nights are played. For sure this is a great metal music album that really rocks!

Buy Children of Bodom Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live album in Headbanger’s webshop!

Children of Bodom Album #5 - Something Wild

Although this album is the last one in my list, it is definitely a great classic album in the world of death metal music. The original C.O.B. sound is loud and clear while young C.O.B. guys play with huge energy and enthusiasm in this album. This album covers the classic songs, In The Shadows, Lake Bodom and Deadnight Warrior. Something Wild is a great death metal album to which you will never get bored.

Buy Children of Bodom Something Wild album in Headbanger’s webshop!

This was my list of top five Children of Bodom albums. I hope you enjoyed and I hope this was useful for you. As I said, this was not a review, just a list of my favorite albums. A review of five albums would take a number of pages, so I prefer reviewing one album at the time. Just as a bonus in this article, I would like to point out a fabulous cover song from Children of Bodom, Oops I Did It Again. That cover song really show how skillful, capable, innovative and just so damn good musicians these guys are. Oh, and just check out how Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvala play Vivaldi. If you don’t know it yet, I bet you have never seen anything like this!

Oh, and there are lots of Children of Bodom T-shirts, beanie hats, patches, hoodies and even watches in Headbanger’s webshop. Check the out!
