Folk Metal für Folk! - Mighty Warriors of Turisas!

1980’s were the time of trash metal, 1990’s we had to suffer from eurodance and disco music in bars, but now metal music is hot as hell! There are more metal bands on Earth than stars on night sky. We’ve got death metal bands, doom metal bands, heavy metal bands, trash metal bands, power metal bands… and we’ve got folk metal bands. We can think that metal music genres are like galaxies in the space and metal bands of those genres are stars in the galaxies. As we now, there are zillions of galaxies out there, so there must be zillion up to zillion stars in the universe.. The point is, there are lots of metal bands nowadays.

Some of those numerous bands are folk metal bands. Hold on! What is folk metal? According to Wikipedia, “folk metal is a diverse collection of music, encompassing a wide variety of different styles and approaches. As the name suggests, the one common ground between folk metal bands is a shared interest in fusing heavy metal music with elements of folk music“.

turisas.jpgTurisas is a folk metal band from Finland, founded in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström. Turisas is known from their usage of the violin and the accordion in similar way as in folk music. Turisas became known during the last couple of years, mostly in central Europe, but also in Scandinavia. It seems that Scandinavian folk metal as well as other kind of metal music is quite popular in Europe right now.

Turisas is also known from their usage of very different clothing and energetic shows. Turisas band members wear as ancient warriors and they look like they have just returned from battle field (or slaughterhouse).

turisas2.jpgI am a trash and death metal fanatic, and I must say folk metal does not impress me too much. I am not much into those costumes and elements of folk music, so I have to say I do not listen to bands like Turisas. I can listen to a couple of tracks, but soon I must switch it into something more timeless and challenging, such as Megadeth and Celtic Frost.

Even though I personally do not listen to Turisas, there is a big audience for this type of metal music. Turisas is one of the bands who know how to entertain metalheads, and it seems these mighty warriors get more and more fans. It is great to see bands of my home country breaking through. Long live Turisas and Viking attitude!

Check out the upcoming shows of Turisas in their MySpace site.
