Guitar World Provides Excellent Service for Guitar Players

Have you been looking for guitar tabs of your favorite bands? I encourage you to check out Guitar World’s new service in which they provide lots of guitar tabs for anyone interested.

Let’s see what Guitar World Tabs says about itself: “Guitar World Tabs is the new online home for 100% accurate and professionally engraved guitar and bass tablature from Guitar World magazine. There are also tons of user tabs and user performance videos to choose from, and we encourage you to register and contribute your own. New songs are being added every day, so be sure to check back for your favorites, and let us know what else you’d like to see on the site“. Sounds like an excellent service. Let’s check it out!

First of all, Guitar World Tabs seems to be a community, not just a static website. This is great, because in a community you can get much more content because many users provide their own tabs. Additionally you can discuss and exchange information in a community, which is not possible with old-school static websites.

Front page of Guitar World Tabs seems pretty good. It’s not the most simple and fastest to learn, but it’s not messy either. Featured, top-rated, most viewed and newest guitar tabs are linked on the front page and can be found easily. You can also see interesting YouTube videos on the front page. Just guess what is the top-rated video right now? Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer.. I know. It could rather be something like Pantera’s Cowboys From Hell.

What I find really nice is that users are also linked by top-rated, most-discussed and most-active. You can see this in the right side of the front page. Additionally the right sidebar includes lessons and videos from Guitar World.

Awesome! I’m starting to like this website! Let’s try to find some tabs to play..

I searched for van halen guitar tabs and I got what I wanted. The first one I see is “You Really Got Me”. No thanks, I don’t want to play it. I rather play the classic “I’ll Wait”.

Looking good. Let me try another search. I have been Judas Priest fan since I was 12 years old. I would like to play their classic Painkiller, so I search for Judas Priest guitar tabs. I got pretty many tabs, but by scrolling down the page I can find Painkiller.

Man, Guitar World Tabs is a great service for guitar players. What say you? I honestly find it good and useful.

Why Finnish Music is so Popular in Japan?

If you compare two cultures, Japanese and Finnish, you won’t find many similarities. May be the only common this is that both Japanese and Finns are workaholics. When it comes to music, I can’t see much similarity. So, why on Earth Finnish metal and even folk music bands are pretty popular in Japan? Some Finnish bands sell more in Japan than in Finland, and some Kantele (traditional Finnish instrument) are not known in Finland but sell pretty much in Japan.

Japan is the world’s second biggest single music market, straight after United States. It is bigger than the rest of the Asia and as big as UK and France together. What is the secret behind the success of Finnish music in Japan? Pale face and blue eyes? Fiercer look and Viking style? Although some Finnish bands have made it, it is not easy to enter the Japanese music market.

Bands like Stratovarius and Hanoi Rocks have been popular in Japan for some years, but new bands like Lovex and Negative are joining the group of Finnish bands performing in Japan. Kantele-artist Eva Alkula is going to have four gigs in Japan this year. So far 100 Finnish artists of different music genres have released their music in Japan. Although those Finnish bands have sold tens of thousands of albums in Japan, most of the ordinary Japanese citizens are not familiar with these bands. But what really is interesting is that a metal music expert of a Japanese record company asks “which one is more popular in Europe - Sonata Arctica or Iron Maiden“? (Source - Soundi Magazine 5/208). This is no wonder because Sonata Artica is more popular in Japan than Robbie Williams for example. Sonata Arctica has sold 70.000 records in Japan so far.

So what makes Finnish music popular in distant Japan? It is melodic music and fashion related things. Melodies of Finnish metal and rock bands sound good in the ears of Japanese people. Additionally the outfit of bands like Lovex and Hanoi Rocks seem pretty cool in the eyes of Japanese people. Japanese also enjoy music sang high, which is one of the reasons why Sonata Arctica sells well in Japan. For example HIM is not popular in Japan because Ville Valo sings low.

Other reasons for the success in Japan are related to making business with Japanese companies of music industry. Personal relationships matter very much and bands need to get high visibility in Japanese media so that they reach their target audience. Bands must be patient and tenacious. It takes time to break through in Japan.

If you are a serious metalhead, you would probably say Lovex sucks. Well, you’re not the only one thinking like that in metal scene, but guess what? Lovex has very high potential to break through in Japan and in the rest of the world. Diablo and Amon Amarth sound better for headbangers but they will never break through because the big masses don’t listen to such heavy music.

Diablo - Still Going Strong

Sorry guys that I have not been blogging lately. I have been way too busy with my work and I have been forced not to blog for some days. It is still a mess here, but I hope I can get back to my daily blogging pace. As I mentioned some time ago, we are setting up a new metal music blog because the domain name of this blog just sucks. It looks like we’ll be able to bring it live somewhere on June-July.

I was on a business trip to Stockholm, Sweden and I came back home last night. It was a great trip, not because of my work but because I met my brother who lives in beautiful Stockholm. My brother visited my hotel room and we played some headbanging music and discussed about music. That’s all we can do, talking about music and booze. We are just two old farts..

While listening to various bands, like Arch Enemy, Soilwork, In Flames and Opeth (see, we were in Sweden), I also discovered Diablo’s albums on my laptop. Diablo is a Finnish band who plays melodic death and thrash metal. Diablo was formed in 1995 by two brothers, and their fifth album (Icaros) has been released in May 2008.

For some reason Diablo has never become a big name. I wonder why, because they simply play great metal music. Their Mimic47 jumped to the top of Finnish album list in 2007, but since those days people have not much talked about Diablo. I believe their marketing has now failed because their music simply rocks. Wanna hear Diablo? Listen to Mimic47 below (from album Mimic47).

My hardcore metalhead friend Jani introduced me Diablo’s music some years ago. I didn’t get kicked in the beginning, but after a couple of weeks I totally got hooked on Diablo. I listened to their album almost daily during several weeks. May be that’s why I haven’t listened to Diablo lately. You should never listen too much only one band..

Now, listen to a little bit older material of Diablo. Here is Read My Scars from Diablo’s album Eternium (2004). Awesome!

I love Diablo’s very heavy guitar riffs and rhythms. Diablo sounds like a massive black train that goes with a stable and fast speed and cannot be stopped. Diablo sounds powerful, fiercer and masculine. Diablo is men’s music. Now, check out Queen of Entity, my all time favorite song of Diablo. Hell yeah!

Diablo can be compared to Metallica, Meshuggah and Queensryche“, says the latest Soundi, Finnish music magazine. That makes sense. Diablo has elements that remind me those bands listed. Diablo’s latest album Icaros is made under new record company, so let’s see if Diablo will get more attention. Oh, but how about live shows? How is Diablo on stage? Check out below how Diablo plays in Helsinki just before Metallica entered the stage.

Diablo. Still going strong.

Five Absolutely Great Metal Covers

Yesterday I just came across with a metal cover of Ricky Martin’s Livin La Vida Loca. It was pretty good, so I decided to search few more. Here are five good metal covers I found in YouTube. For sure there are a lot more, but I didn’t spend more than half an hour. If you know some good covers, please leave links to comments.

Metal Cover #1 Ricky Martin - Livin La Vida Loca by 10 Masked Men
Embedding is not allowed, so please watch the video in YouTube. This is a pretty nice cover, I really like it.

Metal Cover #2 Madonna - La Isla Bonita by Twilight Guardians

These guys are from my country, Finland. Actually I discovered them already last year and I have written about them once, but here they are once again. Enjoy!

Metal Cover #3 Black - Wonderful Life by Nevergreen

Do you remember Black’s Wonderful Life from 1980’s? Well, at least I remember. Here it is played with doom metal tune. Man, I like this one a lot!

Metal Cover #4 Britney Spears - Oops I Think I Did It Again by Children of Bodom

For sure C.O.B.’s cover of Britney Spears is my favorite. Damn it’s just good!

Metal Cover #5 Batman Theme by Corey1987

Let me guess that you haven’t heard this one yet? It’s pretty cool. Batman theme played very well. Listen to it. What say you?

April 2008 Poll Results - Music That Makes Me Sick?

I’ve got interesting results from our April poll in which we asked our readers which music makes you feel sick. We had various choices, such as rap, alternative, country, jazz and even rock and metal.

We received 135 votes in total which is small but decent sample. It is interesting to see the results. In fact, the results are a little bit funny. I understand that most of the votes (21%) were given to rap, which means most of our readers cannot stand rap music. Anyhow, I don’t quite understand that 14% of our readers say metal music makes them feel sick. Dude, this is a metal music blog. We talk about metal music here. Hey, who are reading this blog? ?

Next 14% of the votes were given to country music and 11% to pop music. I think it is pretty common that metalheads cannot stand country and pop music, right? Next 10% of the votes were given to techno/electrical/dance, and what’s surprising, 7% of the votes were given to rock music. Again, who are reading this blog?

Let’s continue. 6% of the votes were given to jazz, 5% to classical, 4% to opera and evergreen and 3% to alternative. According to this poll, most of the readers don’t really like rap, metal and country music. On the other hand most readers do like alternative, evergreen and opera. Hey, was there something wrong with the question?

Wow! This was definitely the most interesting poll so far. I am really surprised with the results. All the people who have written comments in this blog seem to be metalheads, but this poll indicates something else. There are more daily readers than the number of the votes in total, so we can say this poll is not good enough sample in order to generalize the results. I believe most of the readers are metalheads, but it looks like not so many people are interested in providing answers to this kind of polls. Anyhow, thank you for joining this poll! Check out also our March poll results. In March 2008 we asked people if they like metalcore.

March 2008 Question Results - People Love Metalcore!

figure.PNGIn March 2008 we asked “What Do You Think of Metalcore?”. According to the results most people love metalcore. I expected higher resistance to metalcore, so this time our poll was surprising for me.

The choices in the poll were:
* Wow! I love metalcore!
* It’s ok, just music as any other genre.
* Metalcore sucks!
* What is metalcore?

The results of our March poll show that 47% of those who answered love metalcore. 21% of people say “metalcore is ok, just music as any other genre”. What is surprising for me, only 16% say “metalcore sucks”. For some reason I expected a higher figure. May be the reason is that I have seen so many messages of people hating metalcore. Also 16% of those who answered ask “what is metalcore”.

For those who don’t know what metalcore is, see what is said in Wikipedia: “Metalcore is a music fusion genre that incorporates elements of heavy metal and hardcore punk. The term is a portmanteau of heavy metal and hardcore punk. Due to the rise in popularity in the United States during the early 2000s, the genre has also been described as the “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” by some, as an allusion to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal of the late 1970s“.

There are few great metalcore bands. Although I listen to death metal most of the time, every now and then I find myself listening to Bullet For My Valentine. What I really like in BFMV is their guitars. Absolutely great sounds. Also the voice of Matthew Tuck is not bad at all. Bullet For My Valentine is one good example of metalcore bands. Just check their latest video as an example.

Thank you for providing your answer to this question. Please see also our April question and provide your answer!

Five People Injured In ‘Rowdy’ Mosh Pit at Avenged Sevenfold Concert

Blabbermouth is reporting that several patients were taken to hospital after being injured Friday night at the Taste of Chaos concert at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Five people suffered from injuries such as twisted ankles and chest and abdominal pains. The local TV station WFTV has reported that the moshpit in the 5000-people concert got out of hand. Wittinesses say that more than 1000 people were allowed in the pit, which got very rowdy and chaotic.

The Taste of Chaos concert — featuring Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine and Atreyu, among other bands — took place at the UCF Arena“, says Blabbermouth.

In Februry we asked our readers “should moshpits be banned“. The signal is clear no, even though accidents like this happen every now and then.

See the comment of John Claypool. He wants to defend good old mosh pits, but is against chaotic mess of violence. I agree with John. A peaceful mosh-pit is a great place to express yourself, but there are always jerks looking for a fight.

What do you think? Should mosh pits be banned or is this just over-reacting? Leave your opinion to comments.

Do You Hate Metalcore?

MetalMartyr writes how tired it is to hear people saying “I hate metalcore”. In fact, it is tired to hear people complaining how they hate this metal genre and that metal genre. I agree with Scott (the author of MetalMartyr.Com). Many times when people say they hate this and that genre, they actually don’t have much idea of the genre. It appears that many die hard metalheads hate metalcore. Why? Well, I’m not sure, but I guess the reason is that metalcore is more for the masses than thrash, death and especially black metal. I personally enjoy melodic death metal the most, but I am also fan of many thrash, black, power and even metalcore bands. I am not into Linkin Park, which I consider more rock, but I enjoy Bullet For My Valentine very much.

Why people say they hate metalcore? I believe another reason for saying that is that people want to belong to some groups, such as death metal fans or punk fans. In that group people worship the genre they represent, and hating another genre helps to be more individual. Those who “love all kinds of music” are not tightly connected to a certain group. Hmm.. this is how I see it. I might be wrong. What do you think? Leave a comment.

Check out the poll on right sidebar. In that poll I ask “what do you think of metalcore”. Please leave your vote! If you are not sure which bands represent metalcore, examples of those are Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying. Are you a fan of those bands? Just leave your vote to the poll on the right sidebar.

As I said above, I enjoy melodic death metal the most, but I also listen to other metal genres such as thrash and power metal. Additionally I listen to other types of music very much, such as folk and classical. In fact I listen to classical more than metal. I feel that listening to many different kinds of music gives a helluva good basis for understanding various artists. Music in different forms is wonderful. It is something I get addicted to.

Here is one of my favorite videos. Don’t mind the lousy quality. Listen how fabulous piece of music is Rachmaninov’s prelude 23-5 played by Evgeni Kissin.

So I must say I don’t hate any genres. I just love some genres more than others.

February 2008 Question Results - Mosh Pits Should Not Be Banned!

We finally received some snow here in Finland. I was planning to go skiing but I found myself lying on my bed. I’m sick. I’m not feeling good with my stomach. This sucks..

poll.PNGAnyhow, I hate when there is nothing to do. I need to write my blogs but I cannot even think clear. I take an easy topic, February’s poll results. In February we asked “Should Mosh Pits Be Banned“? The answer seems to be clear NO. 42 people out of 52 voted for “no“, which is 81% of all votes. It is clear that mosh pits should not be banned, never.

Five people out of 52 voted for “What is a Mosh Pit?”, which means 10% of those who answered do not know what a mosh pit is. For those who don’t know, I recommend reading about moshing first. Then I recommend you to check out this Beginner’s Guide to the Mosh Pit.

Four people out of 52 voted for “Yes“, which means 8% of those who answered would like to see mosh pits being banned. Mosh pits are a lot of fun but not risk free. Sometimes people get crushed in a mosh pit and unfortunately some people have even died. There are always jerks that are looking for fights instead of having fun in a mosh pit. In this sense I can understand why some people don’t like mosh pits

One person out of 52 voted for “I’m not sure..“, which means that 2% of those who answered have no opinion on this question.

Thank you for providing your answers to this question. I hope this was as interesting poll for you as it was for me. Check out our March question and please give us your opinnion for “What Do You Think of Metalcore“?

If you are interested in our monthly questions, I recommend you to check out the greatest thrash metal band of the 80’s in our January’s question.
